Exams are an integral part of learning something because they provide a goal to work towards, an opportunity to perfect our abilities, and a chance to introspect and retrospect. This is especially true of martial arts, and Taekwondo is no exception. Twice each year, many Ilyeons partake in these "belt exams" to reach the next level of their Taekwondo journey.
The exams consist of the following:
Theory Exam
Display of Techniques
Taegeuks (style forms)
Ilbo Taeryon (one-step sparring)
Hosinsul (self-defense)
Other techniques for higher levels
The theory book can be downloaded here. It includes all the exam requirements per belt up until red belt.
The Kukkiwon Taekwondo Poomsae YouTube playlist is a recommended resource for Poomsae.
For black belt candidates, a comprehensive list (in Dutch) of Taekwondo terminologies can be downloaded here.
Reading the table:
The table lists out the highest taegeuk required for a belt level (this implies that you should know all of the poomsae below that), the minimum number of Ilbo Taeryon and Hosinsil techniques (The exact mix of techniques vary per belt level. Please check with the trainers!) to be demonstrated, and the time duration for sparring rounds.
